4wd Mod at OCRC
Wow! Everyone running in 4wd Mod is fast! Didn't notice that last weekend, since I was too busy trying to get used to driving my new B44. Everyone in the A-main qualified with 17 laps! I felt way more comfortable racing 4wd Mod, since I spent Saturday getting used to driving the car and testing tires. For practice, I wanted to try out the change I made to the front shocks upper mounting location (outside on tower) and my Bobcats fronts again, to make sure they felt slower than my Pink Tapers. I ran the Tapers for my 1st practice run and the Bobcats on the 2nd. The front shock mounting location felt ok, but the Bobcats didn't have the turn-in the Tapers did. I would run the Tapers in round 1 of qualifying.
In round 1, I got a clean start, and crossed the line in 5th. By lap 3, I made it up to 3rd place :) I held 3rd place for most of the race, turning mid 18 second laps, but on one lap, coming off the single-table top after the straightaway, I bounced off the table top, and tumbled right off the track :( I landed on my wheels, but had to turn around and drive back to the opening in the pipe, because the turn marshall was moving slower than frozen molasses :( After that tumble, I couldn't take that jump smoothly for the rest of the race. I kept landing long or short and taking the hairpin too wide. My lap times showed this as I started turning high 18's to low 19's. Half a second a lap slower than the 1st half of the race :( I finished the race in 4th with a 16:05.
In the second round, I got a horrible start :( We were all bunched together approaching the big infield double so I checked up to keep from running into the guys in front of me. It would be no problem clearing the double with a 4wd mod anyway, so I slowed up. The driver behind me didn't agree though and ran into the back of me, flipping me over, and I ended up on my lid at the top of the 1st jump of the double. Great! :( Once I got going again, I settled down and started cranking out laps! I managed to make it up to 3rd place, then 2nd, but I don't remember how! LOL! I guess the guys in 2nd and 3rd wrecked, because I don't remember passing anybody. It's times like this I wish I had a friend video taping my races. I stuffed it into the pipe in the corner at the end of the straightaway and dropped down to 4th, finishing with a 16:01. If I didn't make that mistake, I would've probably turned 17 laps :( Hey, at least I went faster this round :)
I qualified 3rd in the B-main. Not too bad, as everyone is really fast. I noticed in round 2 that my car was slow to rotate around the hairpins, so I decided to change my upper shock mounting location back to the inner hole on the shock tower, as I was used to the steering now :) This was the setup I was running yesterday during practice when I was turning 17 second laps. The start of the main was fairly clean, but I made a mistake early in the race :( Going through the chicane in front of the driver's stand, I clipped the pipe coming up the hill and tumbled into the next lane :( My mistake was to go around the long way and go through the chicane again, instead I should've jumped the pipe and returned to the correct lane. I spent the rest of the race trying to work my way back up to 3rd place. I was turning some really fast laps! All in the low 18's with 2 in row in the mid 17's! My fastest lap was a 17.3! WooHoo! I was gaining on 3rd and could see him a few turns away, but there was less than 30 seconds left in the race, and I ran out of time to catch him. I finished the race in 4th with a 16:01.
For my next race in 4wd Mod, my goals are: (1) go 17 laps, and (2) make the A-main! I'm still not happy with my tire setup though. I want to try some Proline M3 Inside Jobs and softer Panther Bobcats and Switches. I'll probably try them out during a practice day, since doing that really accelerated dialing in my B44. It took me a month of races to dial in my Truck, since I was only attending race days, where there is only 2 hours of practice time.
Go at the tone!
T4 Build Log
Here are a few pics of my uneventful T4 build. Unlike my B44 build, the T4 went together like butter :) I had the entire chassis built in one evening, then built and installed the shocks the next evening. All I have left is to transfer the electronics over from my T3, but I haven't gotten around to it yet since I've been getting my B44 ready to race.

Practice Day
I decided to take my B44 to the Saturday practice at OCRC. I wanted to get used to driving it and work on the setup and tire selection. I reset the suspension back to the kit settings, installed a rear sway bar, and turned the drag brake down in the ESC. For my 1st run I would use my M3 Holeshots front and rear. The steering felt much better than last weekend. Not so twitchy, but it still didn't feel comfortable, so I increased my steering expo to +30% to soften the steering response around center. Something new I noticed was that the timing system was on during practice and the computer was calling out my lap times over a speaker on the driver's stand! Very cool! Good thing I have an AMBrc personal transponder in all my cars! I've never heard that before during practice before racing on Sunday's.
For my second run I raised the height on the inner ball stud on the front end and switched over to Pink Taper Pins front and rear. There were a ton of cars on the track now. So many, that it was difficult to get a clean lap in to see if the changes and tires were helping. I did notice that I could barely get to full throttle on the straightaway though. I had way too much motor in my B44 :) Lol! Anyway, after a Slash truck landed on top of my car, I pulled it off the track before my car ended up broken.
The track was then closed for watering, and controlled practice was started. Each class would run for 10 minutes; Truck, Buggy, then Slash. Since I had some time to kill before the Buggy's were up, I switched my motor over to an LRP 8.5t, to make my car easier to drive. I finished switching motors just in time for the Buggy class to hit the track. I didn't have time to change my tires, so I ran my Pink Taper pins again. Ah! The 8.5t motor made the car much easier to drive! My lap times were still in the mid 18's to 19's, with slow laps in the 20's. LOL! I think I'm just as fast with my Stock Truck! Anyway, the Tapers in the rear were a little loose, while not that bad, I just couldn't lay the rubber down.
For run #4, I switched my tires over to M3 Square Fuzzie's in the rear and Medium-Soft Panther Bobcats for the front. The Square's had more side bite than the Taper's and I could drive out of the corners a little harder, but I wasn't turning in like I wanted with the Bobcats. The Bobcats steering was controllable, but the car didn't turn in fast enough for my taste. My lap times decreased to mid to low 18's. Nice!
For run #5, I cleaned all my tires then sprayed them with a mix of 10% Simple Green and 90% water. The Simple Green makes the surface of the tire very tacky/sticky after the rubber dries. I mounted up the Square's again, but for the fronts I went with my Pink Tapers. These tires were softer than the Bobcats and had softer foam. Hopefully these tires would provide the turn-in I wanted, and they did! I was able to drive hard! My lap times dropped to low 18's with a smattering of 17's, with the fastest being a 17.5! Finally! I was much more comfortable driving my B44 now :) Back in the pits, I tightened up my slipper a little, since I could hear it slipping through the chicane in front of the driver's stand. I also moved the front shocks upper mounting location to the outside hole on the shock tower. This would stiffen the front just a little, and take away a little steering. While I was getting the turn in I wanted, it was still a little "on edge", and this change should get the steering feel just where I want it for racing on Sunday.
Now that my B44 was dialed in, I spent the rest of the practice running my B3 for fun :) I also met Joe of Reflex Racing (http://reflexracing.blogspot.com/) He had pitted across from me and we chatted for a bit. He was working on his XX-4 and running some cars on the mini track. Nice to meet you Joe!
Can't wait to race my B44 tomorrow!

The End and a New Begining
Tonight would be the last official race for my 10 year old T3 truck, as I've recently picked up a new Factory Team T4! My T3's shocks and diff needed a rebuild and the front shock and rear suspension mounts keep coming loose, so rather than hunt down parts to rebuild it, I went ahead and picked up a T4. The T3 has served me well, it's been fun beating people with such an old ride, and I liked the race director's comments about my T3 :) At one point during the night's racing he announced I was turning the fastest laps on the track... with a T3! He then said "You don't need new tech to go fast!" I wonder if they'll notice I'll be racing a T4 the next time I run Truck at OCRC?
Tonight was also the maiden race for my new B44! I've been putting it together over the past 3 weeks and now it was time to turn some laps. I couldn't wait to get this car out on the track :)
This will also probably be a really long entry, as I'll be recapping the racing from 2 classes.
4wd Mod Buggy
I was dying to get the car out on the track! I always hate running a car for the very 1st time :( It's so clean and shiny, I don't want to get it dirty. LOL! Anyway, I put the car on the track and proceeded to test the slipper setting. It was a little on the loose side, but I figured it would tame the power of my 6.5 LRP brushless motor until I got used to how fast the car was and the handling. For my 1st practice lap, I took it very easy, not jumping the big jumps, and going though the corners fairly slow and the straight at 1/2 throttle. I wanted to get a feeling for the steering response and torque, before attempting a lap at full speed. Everything felt ok, so I let'er rip on the second lap. OMG! The traction and torque this thing has! I overshot the big double on the track by 5-6 feet and hit the ground with a loud slap :( I was still on my wheels, so I continued on. Wow this car turns on a freaking dime! Any movement on the steering wheel and it darted in that direction! On lap 3, I overshot the table top after the turn off the straight and I was nose down, so I hit the ground nose first, and ended up on my lid. So much for my shiny car :( I walked off the driver's stand to marshall myself and flipped it over, then punched the gas. I heard a not so nice grinding sound from the car :( Wow! What a short maiden run for my B44 :( Back in the pits I checked the pinion gear mesh, and the motor had moved just enough to disengage from the spur gear. The spur wasn't chewed up too bad so I just reset the gear mesh and tightened the motor mounting screws. In the B44, the motor is mid-mounted and in-line in the car, thus the head of the motor mounting screws point to the rear of the car. It's also close to the battery, making it difficult to get an allen wrench in the small space and tighten the motor mounting screws. I also noticed a puddle under the car. WTF?! One of the rear shocks had blown a seal and all the oil was leaking out! I guess the seal blew out when I landed hard after overshooting the big double. Crap! Now I've got to rebuild the shock! I decided to get a practice run in with my Truck, while I had a chance, since I knew it would take me a while to make the repairs to my 4wd. After my practice run, I began to pull the blown shock off the car and install a new seal, when they announce that the track would be closed in 15 minutes for watering and they would hold a driver's meeting since there were 13 heats tonight! Oh great! There was no way I would be able to finish the repair and get a practice run in. I would have to get a feel for my 4wd during the 1st round of qualifying, as I've only put 3 laps on the car so far! :(
For the 1st round the track would be damp, as they were going to mist the track before my heat (they were misting the track every 5-6 heats or so). I got a decent start and just tried to not wreck. I still needed to get used to the steering and throttle and was taking an easy. I went over the big double-- overshoot and chassis slap :( I did this for most of the race, trying to figure out how much throttle it takes to downside this big double. I was also trying to get a feel for the steering, which was really twitchy, compared to my smooth steering Truck. Oh and what a rush down the straight! It was a rocket! Warp 9.9, Engage! I finished in 4th with a 16:04. Most of my lap times were in the mid 18's with a glory lap of 17.375! But they were inconsistent, with a long lap of 22 seconds. Not too surprising, since this was my very 1st race with this car with essentially no practice!
For the second round, I wanted to slow down the steering response, so it would feel like my Truck, making it easier to switch between driving the two, and easier to drive fast. I increased the camber from -1° to -3°, swapped in the next stiffer spring (AE Blue), and raised the front ride height. This time the track would be dry. I didn't like how the car felt at all. The steering was still too twitchy, making it hard to drive smooth. It was also doing this weird kicks off jumps, I've never run into with my truck. The throttle was really sensitive in the air too. It only took a little bit of gas or brake to raise/lower the nose of the car. I also had to figure out how to jump the big double this run. I would punch the gas after the roller, and almost coast over the big double. I would downside the jump or overshoot by a foot or so, rather than 4-5 feet. I went a lap slower this round, finishing in 5th with a 15:02. Almost everyone else went 17 laps :(
For the main, I would be the BQ (top qualifier of the B main, or just slow enough to miss the A main). The track was slightly damp this time. I should have changed over to Square Fuzzies or Taper Pins, instead of using my Holeshots, but I was busy getting ready for the main. I moved my front shock's upper mounting position to the outer hole on the shock tower and tightened the front diff, hopefully these changes would slow down the steering a little. During my second warm-up lap though, I heard a sound that sounded familiar. The grinding of a pinion on a spur gear :( Nuts! I didn't bother to ask for a grace period to reset the gear mesh, since it takes a while to do it, because I need to take out the battery to have enough room to tighten the motor mounting screws. The main started without me on the pole, as I was walking back to the pits. I reset the mesh, then headed back out to get some practice laps in. I stayed away from the other cars turning a few laps to see if the changes I made any difference. It helped, but I still wasn't comfortable driving the car :(
Some of the changes I want to make before the next time I race my B44. I want some harder compound front tires to slow the steering response; reset the shock mounting location, spring, and camber back to the stock settings; install a rear sway bar, as this is supposed to make the car easier to drive; raise the front inner ball stud; decrease the drag brake; add expo in the steering; cut down an allen wrench to get to the motor mounting screws without having to remove the battery; thread lock the motor mounting screws so they won't loosen up; and I hate lexan undertrays and battery hold down thumb screws!
Stock Truck
When signing up, I asked Robert what gear he was running in his truck. He told me 78/31, with no overheating problems. After hearing that one of the fastest drivers in the class was running a 6.5 ratio, I decided to gear back up to a 29 pinion for round 1, keeping an eye on my motor temps of course :)
In round one, the track was only slightly damp, since we were the last heat of the round, so I ran my Stingers on the rear. I've always had great results running this tire, so I ran them, while most of the other guys were using Holeshots. I got a clean start and was in 3rd for the 1st 4 laps or so. I caught 2nd place, and he made a mistake over the double and roller leading to the straight, getting stuck on a pipe. I went by into 2nd! I continued turning laps as fast as I could, since I could see the lead truck about a lane in front of me. I was turning mid to low 19 second laps, with a hero lap of 18.843 :) I finished in 2nd with my fastest run in Stock Truck yet, a 16:12 :)
For round 2, the track was in the same condition as round 1, so I stuck with my Stingers again. I also decided to gear up another tooth, to a 30 pinion, as my motor temp was still safe at 160°F after round 1. This round would not go as well as round 1. I got a horrible start, as my 1st 2 laps were in the 25 second range. I also had another long lap near the end of the race :( I kept making stupid mistakes this race. I wasn't driving clean at all. I think I was just trying too hard. I finished the race in 3rd with a horrible 14:00 time.
I qualified 4th in the A main out of 14 drivers (7 in the A)! Not bad for the last run of my T3 :) For the main I switched over to my new set of Stingers, since my old set was staring to feel a little loose. Again I got a horrible start, as a marshall stepped in front of my Truck while I was trying to drive around an accident, and kicked me into it! WTF!?! This is why when I marshall, oncoming cars always have the right of way. I don't want to mess up somebody's race by stepping in front of their car. Unfortunately, this marshall did not share the same belief, and I left the pile up in last place :( It only took me 4 laps to get back up to 4th place, even though these 2 drivers, ran into me a few times. Passing 3rd place would not be as easy though. We were evenly matched in speed. It would come down to who would not make any mistakes. He made a bobble and I slipped into 3rd. On one lap, we both made mistakes going over the big double. I overshot the jump, landing long, and going wide in the hairpin. The 4th place truck landed in the wrong lane, pulled a 180, and went into 3rd place, by cutting the track! Great! He should've stopped and let me by :( It didn't last long though, as he was immediately given a stop-and-go penalty by the race director, and I went back into 3rd. But, I made a mistake a lap later, and he got by me :( With time running out, I tried to make a pass and hoped for a mistake, but no luck. I finished in 4th with a 16:19. Only my 3rd 16 lap run on this layout.
Well that's it for my T3! I'm almost finished building my T4 (build photos and log coming soon!). All that is left is to build and mount the shocks and install all the electronics. I wonder if I can mount my T3 body on the T4? Then a part of my T3 can live on!
Keep the shiny side up!

What a night!
Went racing at OCRC tonight to run Sportsman Truck and Sportman 4wd Mod. What a tiring night! There where 13 heats and 2 heats in Truck and 4wd! I was racing in heat 5 and 13, and even with all the time between races, I had no time to relax at all :( I don't think I'll be racing 2 classes again, for club racing anyways. It didn't help that I had a headache the entire night either. Here are some quick comments about the racing:
Truck: It works great! and finally figured out the gearing by getting some advice from Robert Black. Thanks Robert!
4wd: Needs a ton more setup work for me to drive fast. Hard to switch back and forth from the smooth steering feel of my Truck to the twitchy steering 4wd. Need some front tires with not so much grip, or adjust my expo and dual rate in the radio. Definitely need to run the B44 during a practice day and work on the setup. A little throttle in 4wd Mod goes a long, long, long way! LOL! And what a rocket down the straight!
Full race recap of each class coming soon, when I'm not so tired and don't have a headache :(

It's alive!
I finally finished mounting all the electronics! Bench tested all the running gear and setup the toe, camber, and ride height. I plan to paint the body tomorrow (temp body w/1 color, until I get my custom paint body from my buddy/painter). Hopefully I can shake it down Saturday at OCRC, then race it on Sunday :)

Intense racing at OCRC
More fast drivers were racing tonight, as I was fighting every round for 3rd place! There were 9 trucks running too, so there was traffic every few laps. Every heat was so intense that my knees were shaking as I stood at my marshall spot! LOL! It took me the entire heat I was marshalling to calm back down. Anyways on to the recap.
The first round of qualifying was rough. Everyone kept running into each other. I got punted in the hairpin after the double following the straight more than once. I admit, I was driving very aggressive and as fast as I could go, and probably returned the favor of getting hit a few times myself. I always try to drive clean, but if I get hit, I'm returning the favor. In fact, if the driving of the others in my heat is clean, I'll drive clean. If everyone is aggressive, so am I. The rough driving showed in the times for the heat. Robert Black only turned 15 laps, when he can usually go 17 laps. Everyone else turned 15 laps or slower. I turned a 15:12 finishing in 4th. For this round I was running the same gear as at HRH, 78/29. My motor temp was a safe 150°F. I also turned my fastest single lap at 18.829 sec. The dirt was also pretty damp, so I was running my new Holeshots on the rear. Unlike last week, when the dirt was a tad drier, and I was running my Stingers.
In the second round of qualifying, the driving was much cleaner. The top 2 truck went 17 laps and 3rd/4th both went 16 laps. I finished 5th with a 15:00. Hmm. I think I'll move my transponder to the front of my truck! In this heat again, I was fighting for 3rd place. There were 3 of us running together all trying for 3rd. It was intense! I was doing my best to drive clean, but we all got tangled one time or another, and I kept making small mistakes. My motor temp with the same gear was 160°F, and I upped my single fastest lap to 18.680 sec. Although my fastest single lap was getting faster, my truck didn't have the same punch off the corners. For the main I went back to same gear I was running last week, 78/27.
For the main the track was watered, then we took a 30 min break. During the break Robert Black (track owner) was laying down a coating of maple syrup on the racing line. Hahaha! I guess traction would be good for the mains! The main was more of the same. Intense battling for 3rd place! I got a clean start and the battle began. A few laps later, I got punted in the same hairpin again as the 1st round. But this time it was so hard, my truck was spun around! Great! Here we go again :( I did manage to make it up to 3rd place for a lap or two, but made stupid mistakes, that I would not normally make, but I was driving so hard and aggressive, just to stay with the other 2 drivers in the battle for 3rd. I finished the main in 5th, just 1 second behind 4th, with a 15:12. My truck had what felt like way more punch out of the corners this time, but my fastest single lap was only a 19.138. I bet it would've been faster if I could get some laps in away from the other drivers. I was always in a battle for position.
For my next race at OCRC, I want tp change out the rotor in my motor, as the magnets are beginning to feel weak. When the motor was new, the rotor was difficult to spin, now it almost free spins. This is a sign that the rotor magnets have weakened. I'm also thinking of trying the Orion or Novak 17.5 bl motor. When taking a peak at Robert's truck, I saw that he was using the Novak bl system, while I run the LRP one. I wonder if the Novak 17.5 is faster than the LRP? Now, I need to find out what gear he's running, and I wonder if it'll be the truth!
See you next time at OCRC! If you're reading this, and I hit you/tangled with you in tonight's racing, sorry about that. But, you probaly hit me too, so we're even now :)

A nice night for some racing
Since the weather for Saturday was supposed to be alot cooler in Santa Clarita than the last 2 weekends, I decided to race at HRH under the lights :) I got there about 2 hours before start time and set up my pit in the shade of the far corner of the pits. The track was really dry and dusty, so I decided to practice after the track would be watered. I didn't need to learn the layout, since it was still the same as the last time I was here. I would be playing around with the gearing in the truck tonight, aiming for a temp of 170°F at the end of a 10 min run. I put my IFMAR pins on the rear of the truck and headed out for my practice run. I started my countdown timer and turning some laps. Wow! I had no punch at all :( I guess my practice pack is really flat. I was having a tough time clearing any of the big jumps. When my timer went off, I pulled in and took the temp of my motor. 172°F. I'll start off with a 78/28 for round 1.
As I walked up to the track, I noticed the paint job of a fellow rc blogger and racer, Kevin of Kevin's RC Racing Blog (http://kdoffroad.blogspot.com/). I've been reading Kevin's RC blog for a few weeks now, and it was cool to meet the person behind the blog :) The track would be bone dry for round 1, better suited to Holeshots rather then the IFMAR pins on my truck, but I was saving my Holeshots for racing at OCRC, so I toughed it out on the IFMAR's. I started the heat 7th of 7 trucks. I took an easy on the start, driving around an accident in the 1st turn, and managed to make it up to mid-pack, I think. The rest of the heat was a joke. I was either ending up on my lid, or getting punted off the track. In the hairpin leading up to the big triple, I was on the outside of another truck, and he pushed me completely off the track, and I got stuck on a pipe! I guess I'll need to give the other trucks in this heat way more room. I still managed to finish 3rd with a 11:04.
For round 2, the track was damp, like I'm accustomed to at HRH. I would be starting in 1st for this heat, so I would try to run away from the field, to avoid getting tangled up. It worked and I got a nice clean start and pulled away from everyone else. I made a bunch of bobbles during the next lap, allowing Brent to catch me by the end of the 2nd lap. I headed down the hill, and went too wide over the roller at the bottom. Brent went to the inside and took the lead! Nuts! He checked out after that, and I didn't make any major mistakes, and stayed away from the other drivers. I finished the heat in 2nd with a 12:09.
The sun had fully set by now, and it was nice and cool out. Time for the mains under the lights :) I decided to gear up a tooth for the main, since my motor temps were hovering around 135°F after 5 min. The main would be 7 min long though, and I wondered if I would be geared too high, overheating my motor. I qualified 2nd for the main behind Brent. We took off at the tone and I made it clean through the 1st few turns. However, I got a bit tangled up and lost sight of my truck for a second in the short chute between the table top and triple. I lucked out though and got away 1st, and still in 2nd place. The rest of the main was uneventful. Brent pulled away from me, and I pulled away from 3rd place, eventually lapping him. I finished 2nd with a 17:19, a lap behind Brent :( I temped my motor at the end of the main, 150°F. Cool! Maybe I'll try this gearing at OCRC.
I better get going! I'm heading down OCRC for another night of racing! See ya at the track!

B44 Chassis almost complete
The rest of the parts I needed came in today! I should be able to finish putting the chassis together tonight :) All that will be left is to mount the electronics and paint and trim the body. I also ordered some lipo battery trays from Diggity Designs, as Damon says he has them back in stock and is shipping this week.
Tire crazy!
While I was racing at OCRC Sunday, I picked up a bunch of tires for my truck and 4wd. I didn't realize how many I bought until I sorted them out last night! I picked up front and rears for the truck, 2 pairs of rears for the 4wd and a pair of 4wd fronts. I guess it looks like alot of, since everything is un-mounted, and it's just a pile of tires, foams, and wheels. Tires account for 90% of your setup though, while the other 10% are adjustments to the shocks, suspension geometry, and chassis.
I ended up with some Edges and Stingers for the truck and Taper Pins front and rear for the 4wd. I then picked up a set of Square Fuzzies for the rears of the 4wd, because the Taper Pins didn't work very well on my truck. If the front taper's don't work either, I'll try some soft Panter Bobcats or make my own 4wd Square Fuzzie fronts. Another option are the Inside Jobs, front and rear. Hmmm... Looks like I have some tire testing to do :(

Race day!
I headed out to OCRC for some Sunday racing action! I wondered how the turnout would be since the JBRL race in Hemet was running today. For this race, I would be playing around with my brake epa, as I had it turned all the way up, since I wanted the truck to rotate around the hairpins. I also reset my toe-in to 0° and camber to -1°, since I've been running too much toe and camber.
During practice the track was pretty damp, and traction was good. I came into the hairpin and stabbed the brake, then promptly spun out. Next lap, the same thing. I pulled over and reset my brake epa, turning it down 3% from maximum. This time when I entered the hairpin, my truck slowed nicely and rotated! No spin out! I ran my practice pack out, getting a feel for the new brake and camber settings. During my next practice run, the track was starting to dry out. I was still running my nearly bald Holeshots and I was sliding around a bit, and couldn't get on the throttle too hard.
The track was watered after practice and would be slightly damp for the 1st round of qualifying. The fast guy (Joesph Smalley- Factory AE driver, btw) was running Holeshots. My Holesots were shot, so I ran my Stingers instead. The track wasn't so damp that the pins would clog up with dirt, so I'd be fine. During warm-up I had a ton of bite! So much, that I was clearing a small double that normally I would donkey kick (land a little short such that the rear end kicks up in the air, but doesn't upset the truck otherwise) and overshooting the big double with a short take-off! Wow! I like these tires! :) I would be starting the heat in 4th out of 7 trucks. We freight trained around the 1st turn and over the double and into the hairpin. The 2nd and 3rd place trucks tangled and I got around clean into and 2nd place behind Smalley! For the rest of the heat I drove as fast as I comfortably could. I pulled away from 3rd and 1st steadily pulled away from me. I finished the heat in 2nd, turning my fastest run on this layout to date, a 16 5:21! WooHoo!! Not too shabby for a 10 year old truck :) My lap times were mostly in the mid 19 second range with a handful of 20's. I also finally turned an 18 second lap! Well barely, 18.9 seconds LOL! Btw, Smalley was turning laps as fast as a 4wd mod buggy (mid 17's), with a Stock Truck! I hope he racing Sportsman, because there aren't enough drivers for Expert Stock Truck.
For round 2 of qualifying the track conditions would be the same, so I decided to try my new Pink Taper Pins as an experiment, since I was nicely seated in 2nd. OMFG! What a mistake! I had no rear traction at all! I was sliding around the corners and couldn't get on the gas :( I finished the heat in 6th with a horrible 13 lap run. Meanwhile 2 drivers went faster than my 16:21 run, and I would be starting the main in 4th. When comparing the Stingers to the Taper Pins, the Tapers have a shorter spike than the Stingers. I think this causes the tapers to ride up on the dust on the track instead of cut through, thus the Stingers with the longer spike have more traction. The rubber compund of the Stingers also feels softer compared to the Tapers. To test this theory, I'll try using some traction compound on the Tapers during practice. If the Tapers work better, then the problem was the rubber compound and not the spike length, On to the mains!
For the mains the track would be slightly more damp than in qualifying. Wet spots were visible in the dirt off the racing line. If I had some fresh Holeshots, I would've run those, but mine were about bald, so I ran my Stingers instead. (Smalley was still running Holeshots, FYI) During warm-up, I had a ton of traction again, and was overshooting the double! Cool! I guess the racing line was only slightly damp :) We all took off on the tone, went over the double, then in the hairpin the 1st 3 trucks got tangled! I went around the pileup as the TQ got free. I followed him around the next few turns, then he was gone. LOL! I went around the track in 2nd for the 1st 5-6 laps, then made a mistake :( I clipped a pipe and got sideways long enough for 3rd to get by, as he was only 2 or so turns behind me :( There were no further lead changes for the rest of the main. Smalley in 1st, Pierce in 2nd, and me in 3rd. I finished the main in 3rd with a lap on 4th! It felt good running fast and having people move over for me again, since I was one of the race leaders :-D
I picked up another set of Stingers before I went home, but this time I also got some different foam inserts for them. The ones the Stingers come with and I'm currently using are very stiff, causing the rear to feel a bit unstable, even though they have great bite. I'll try some Trinity Bomb One white inserts, which feel similar to the stock Proline inserts, but the foam is made from a denser material. I hope that doesn't take away from the traction of the tire! I also want to try shortening the length of my front camber links, as that's supposed to quicken the steering response.

My B44 build continues
Friday night some parts that I had been waiting for arrived! My new servo, speed controller, and transmission shims, along with some other odds and ends I needed.
I used the shims to take all the side-to-side play out of the diffs in the front and rear gear cases. This would hopefully prevent the gears from stripping. I installed the gearboxes on the chassis and checked how "free" they spun. They were a bit tight, so I decided to break-in the gears. I installed a stock motor and ran it at 3 volts for about 3 hrs, taking a break every 30 min. When I checked the "spin" again, it was much better but still a bit "notchy". So I hooked the motor back up and ran it at 5 volts for another hour or so, in 10 min intervals. The gears didn't feel as "notchy" anymore, but they were still not free spinning. That will come as I run the car. Or maybe I'll take out a shim or 2. We'll see.
There wasn't much left I could do with the chassis, so I mounted up my tires with Proline 2 stage foam and called it a day. I still needed to get ready to race Stock Truck at OCRC Sunday!

B44 build photos
I was planning to race at HRH, but it's way too hot out again. As I write, it's currently 106°F in Santa Clarita at 11:55 am!! So, instead I thought I'd post some pics from my B44 build :) Then I'll be racing at OCRC tomorrow afternoon.

B44 build, night #2
I wasn't able to find the right shock ball end, so my rear shocks aren't built yet. I want the latest version of this part, coming off the newer mold. It has more material around the eyelet hole and has the cavity #'s of the mold on the part.
I was able to assembly most of the front and rear gearboxes and suspension, but I still need a few parts before I can complete them. I need extra diff shims to tighten the gear mesh of the diffs, since I've heard of them stripping under heavy load and titanium hinge pins to replace the heavy stock steel ones (I always run Lunsford titanium hinge pin in all my cars). Once I get these parts I can finally put everything together and it will start looking like a buggy vs a pile of parts :)
I also still need to pick up a Lipo battery brace from Diggity Designs (http://www.diggitydesigns.com/D3_B44_SaddleBraces.html), but they're still out of stock :( I guess I'll have to come up with some other method to hold the Lipo in the car until they are available again.

My B44 arrives!!
My B44 arrived last night! I began the build after I finished dinner. I put together the diffs and front shocks with no issues, but I ran into a problem when building the rear shocks. A shock rod end must've split when I installed the pivot ball, because it spread wide apart when I attempted to screw it onto the shock shaft. So, I need to pick a new one today, along with some new foam inserts ( the kit ones were kinked). I quit for the night after building all the turnbuckles and steering bellcranks. It may seem like I didn't get alot built, but diffs and shocks need to built correctly to make sure the car handles well. so I took my time with building these components :)
More of my build log and some pics coming soon!

Want to buy some Spektrum equipment?
I think I just found my new radio! Damm! I just bought a Spektrum M8 module and 3 Pro reciever's a month ago too! LOL! I've used Airtronics radios forever, because I like the feel of the trigger, but if I like the trigger feel on this new native 2.4 GHz radio, I may just switch to Futaba! I've looked at he DX3R from Spektrum, but I just don't like the look. Now, the 4PK just looks sick!
New car on the way!
I've got a new ride on its way out to me... A Team Associated Factory Team B44!!
I'm going to set this car up with all the goodies! LRP Sphere Competition TC brushless ESC, LRP Vector X11 6.5t motor, Spektrum Pro reciever, Airtronics 94362Z Rock Crusher steering servo, and TrakPower 4800mah saddle pack Lipo :)
I have a Yokomo MX-4 that I purchased in '98. It's still in running condition, but I can only find a few parts for it on Ebay now. What a shame, as I was only able to race that car a few times at the off-road Reedy Race of Champions. I remember that car breaking every round at that race! LOL! I should be able to race the B44 every weekend at OCRC, as they have a pretty good turn out in Mod 4wd, and if I break, I can get replacement parts right at the track at the on-site hobby shop :)
